Our Story

Established in April 2007
By qualified brass and woodwind musical instrument repair technician, Sean Murphy. It all started in a white cottage surrounded with beautiful flowers in Howick, Auckland. Mia joined DR TOOT as an administrator soon after.

In 2008, DR TOOT moved to another house in Howick. The main part of our business was servicing & repairing brass & woodwind musical instruments and teaching from home and at a school in Auckland.

In 2009, DR TOOT's first website was created by Mia, and DR TOOT registered with TradeMe. DR TOOT started selling accessories for brass & woodwind musical instruments.

Later in 2009, DR TOOT started importing used/second hand musical instruments from Japan directly. This part of the business has grown and grown. Because of this, and more and more instruments coming in for servicing and repairs, we had to find a newer and larger premise.

In December 2011, DR TOOT moved into a large new home at this current address in Howick. The house has separate rooms for the show room, office, and teaching studio. The large double garage has been converted into DR TOOT's new repair workshop.

In 2012, DR TOOT became a distributor for Ishimori (WoodStone) Woodwind Instruments in Japan and Gonzalez Reeds in Argentina. Also, online shopping was born in June.

In 2013, DR TOOT became an official New Zealand distributor for Henri Selmer Paris. DR TOOT now carries brand new Henri Selmer Paris products - saxophones, clarinets, mouthpieces, cases...etc. are available in New Zealand through DR TOOT.

In 2014, we achieved 500 positive feedbacks (100%) on Trade Me and 300 Likes on Facebook. In November, we held our first Selmer workshop, “Selmer Night with Guest Artists” in Auckland - presented Selmer Paris products and Gonzlaez reeds. Also, DR TOOT repair workshop has been completed and more efficient than ever.

In 2015, DR TOOT became a sponsor of local brass band, Howick Brass, and continued presenting Selmer workshops in Rotorua, Wellington and Auckland. We also continued our support and involvement with the New Zealand Concert Band National Festival held in Rotorua. DR TOOT is also proud to support other organizations such as Baradene College and Sistema Aotearoa.

In 2016, our new look website was launched. In September, a qualified repair technician, Masaru from Japan joined the team.

In 2017, another qualified repair technician, Taka from Japan joined the team in July. We started importing Briccialid flutes from Italy in September.

In 2018, we became the Kanstul distributor for New Zealand and Australia.

Working from home, allows us to be flexible with our time to help the needs of our customers. We welcome old and new customers to our home - if you are lucky, you will be greeted by Zara or Alfa (our two cats), who will give you a purrrrfect introduction to DR TOOT ! We look forward to seeing you soon.
